Googled “best website builder” lately? You’ve probably seen the comparison articles. They talk about features, templates, pricing tables. What they don’t tell you is which one actually works when you’re running a small business in Zimbabwe with real constraints.
I’ve built sites on all three. Here’s the unvarnished truth.
The Short Answer
For 90% of Zimbabwean small businesses: WordPress. Here’s why.
WordPress: The Workhorse
WordPress powers about 43% of all websites on the internet. That number exists because it’s genuinely good, not just because of hype.
Pros:
- Complete control. You own your site. No platform can suddenly change the rules on you.
- Massive ecosystem — if you need a feature, there’s probably a free plugin for it.
- Scales with your business. Started with a basic site? You can add e-commerce, bookings, membership areas as you grow.
- It’s what professionals use. When you eventually hire a developer, they’ll know WordPress.
Cons:
- There’s a learning curve. It’s not drag-and-drop first time, but it’s not code either.
- You need decent hosting (which is where we come in — $1/month to start).
Wix: The Pretty Simplicity
Wix looks amazing out of the box. Beautiful templates, drag and drop, anyone can use it.
Pros:
- Truly beginner-friendly interface
- Hosting included — one less thing to worry about
The deal-breaker: You don’t own your site. You’re renting on Wix’s platform. If they decide to change pricing, or if they shut down (unlikely but possible), your site goes with them. Want to move to a different host? Good luck. Exporting from Wix is… painful.
Squarespace: The Designer’s Choice
Squarespace wins on aesthetics. Their templates are stunning out of the box.
But here’s the thing — it’s premium pricing with premium limitations. For a small Zimbabwean business trying to keep costs low, Squarespace’s monthly fees add up fast. And again: you’re locked into their ecosystem.
The Zimbabwe Factor
Hosting costs matter here. Wix and Squarespace charge in USD. WordPress hosting can start at $1/month (hi, that’s us). That difference matters when you’re building a business.
Payment integration also matters. Your site needs to work with EcoCash, Zipit, or international payments. WordPress plugins handle all of these. Wix and Squarespace? More limited options for local payments.
Bottom Line
If you’re serious about your business, invest the time in WordPress. Yes, there’s a learning curve. But once you understand how it works, you have genuine control over your digital presence.
